Background:
Lillie's history is given to us in handfuls throughout the game, with some pieces from the Anime filling in gaps. Coming from the Ultra games, some points are softened. Still, reminder that her story contains child abuse and neglect!
Growing up, Lillie did not live in any of the popularized Pokemon regions. She knew of them and traveled them with her parents, but she never lived there. She instead lived on an artificial island called Aether Paradise. It was a structure created in the oceans of Alola by the Aether Foundation, which in turn, was run by Lillie's parents. Lusamine and Professor Mohn were united in a happy marriage and shared interest in Pokemon conservation. They had created the Foundation to support research into caring for Pokemon, their environments, and their longterm survival.
But why Alola? Because the couple had another interest: Ultra Beasts. These creatures from another realm entered the Pokemon World through Ultra Wormholes and were considered predators. They were dangerous and disruptive to the cycle of the Pokemon world. Naturally, conversationalists would worry about this unnatural threat. So they built the Foundation's HQ in Alola, where these legends came from, and researched Ultra Wormholes in the lower levels of the Aether Foundation.
... On the upper levels was Lillie! Lillie and her older brother, Gladion, lived in a mansion on Aether Paradise. They grew up with very positive Pokemon experiences. Lillie herself came to care deeply for Pokemon and saw them not for battling, but for being beautiful creatures worthy of protecting. She lived happily with her parents and reflects on a positive childhood. Neither child initially knew that their parents researched Ultra Beasts in the basement. Not until the accident.
The Anime implies that this accident happened when Lillie was around three years old. Her parents opened an Ultra Wormhole, only for Professor Mohn to disappear inside. This triggered her mother, Lusamine's, descent into utter madness. Lusamine was desperate to rescue her husband, which led to her opening more Wormholes. Eventually, Lusamine encounter the Ultra Beast Nihilego. And it all went downhill from there.
Nihilego exert a neurotoxin that cause their victims to lose inhibitions. They also excite their host, much like a drug. Repeated exposure through her research led to Lusamine becoming obsessed with Ultra Beasts, Nihilego in particular, and lost sight of her goals. Lusamine ordered the creation of Type:Null, an artificial Pokemon that could kill Ultra Beasts. She also began abusing Cosmog, a Pokemon that created Ultra Wormholes, in her hunt to reunite with Nihilego.
And she also took out her obsession on Lillie.
Lusamine began dressing Lillie to look like Nihilego. If she couldn't capture the Ultra Beast yet, she would capture her own daughter. She restricted Lillie's movements and confined her to the Aether Foundation, and gradually became more interested in Ultra Beasts than her own children.
Lillie hated all of this. She felt like a doll and she became afraid of her mother's unhinged emotions. Gladion and her found out about the research, because no one was really stopping them anymore. They saw Lusamine hurting Pokemon, which their mother would never do, and knew something was incredibly wrong.
When Lillie was eight years old, her brother finally had enough. He had bonded with Type:Null and decided to run away with it. Gladion fled Aether Paradise with Type:Null, leaving Lillie to deal with an angry mother. Lillie was smothered with attention, but not of the loving variety. Lusamine was controlling Lillie and using her as a Nihilego replacement, adoring her not as a daughter but as a Pokemon.
The people around Lusamine were largely unhelpful. Lusamine employed Team Skull to help with her Ultra Beast hunting, and the Branch Chief Faba practically encouraged the insanity. Lillie only had two allies. The first was Cosmog: She felt sympathy and kinship for the Pokemon. They had both gone from positive relationships with Lusamine to hellish nightmares. Lillie could see a bit of herself in Cosmog's suffering.
Her other ally was an employee named Wicke. Wicke felt powerless to help Lillie and Lusamine both, but couldn't stand by any longer. When Lillie was eleven years old, Wicke created her escape opportunity. She told Lillie to find "Professor Burnet," a woman studying the same field as Lusamine, and gave her the push she needed. Lillie stole Cosmog (nicknamed "Nebby,") stuck them in a bag, and fled. When the pair were cornered, Cosmog activated their power and teleported Lillie away. She woke up on a beach in Alola. Tired, cold, but far away from Aether.
Lillie did find/was found by Professor Burnet. The kind professor sent Lillie to live with Professor Kukui, Burnet's husband, on the island of MeleMele. Lillie knew from overhearing her mother that Nebby was possibly from another realm, so wanted to help her friend return home. To do that, she realized she would need the help of the islands' Kahuna. They would hopefully help Lillie contact the Legendary Guardian Pokemon of each island, and maybe get help for Nebby.
However, Lillie herself had no way to travel between islands. She also lacked the courage to travel alone. So she stayed on MeleMele Island, too scared to take the next step. That is, until a wander up an island pathway, and to a rickety old bridge, cause Lillie's path of destiny to collide with another foreigner.
Lillie comes from right before meeting the protagonist. As such, future applicants from SuMo do not need to worry about which gender identity they choose for Sun or Moon.
Personality:
Lillie's character is one that grows throughout the games, thanks both to the people and challenges that she encounters during the storyline. As such, while this Lillie (pre-game Lillie,) will be at the very beginning of her character arc, I have some foresight into how she's likely to grow.
For starters, the Lillie that players first encounter is relatively shy. She is soft spoken, sometimes even with a stutter, and cautious with her words. Lillie is a secretive little girl, having found herself in a situation where secrets aid her survival. The person she once trusted above all else, her own mother, has turned against her. Lillie cautiously opens herself up to Kukui and MeleMele's Kahuna, but it is a slow process. Even with the protagonist, Lillie only reveals Nebby because her hand was forced. She keeps further details of Nebby locked away, only revealing bits as they are forced out of her.
Trust is something that this eleven year old, sadly, lacks. However, we see a capacity for her to learn to trust. In fact, Lillie is starved for trust. She comes around to Professor Kukui relatively quickly, and trusts the Kahuna and Trial Captains based solely on their rank. She even comes to trust the protagonist quickly. Because despite not being able to trust people initially, Lillie wants to trust people. She is an optimistic girl at her core.
Optimism is something that drives Lillie's story. Plenty of people around her come to tell her that Lusamine is a lost cause, for example, and she is given plenty of reason to give up throughout the story. However, Lillie holds onto the idea that a happy ending is possible.
Abilities:
Nebby: Lillie will arrive with Nebby still in her duffle bag. Nebby is a Cosmog, which is the first stage evolution of a Legendary Pokemon. However, for the purposes of roleplaying Nebby, they will never be able to evolve to their final form.
As Nebby is essentially a baby form, they don't have perfect control over their powers. The most Nebby is seen doing on purpose is teleporting: Nebby can teleport themselves and those touching them to another location. This doesn't appear to be a well controlled ability, or Nebby probably wouldn't have dumped Lillie in the ocean. This also leaves Nebby immobile for weeks afterward, so would only come up in emergencies.
Lillie: In comparison, Lillie doesn't have any fantastical abilities. She is well educated and knows a lot about Pokemon, but has no superpowers.
Alignment: Thras- Lillie starts the game fearful of her mother and situation. Her journey with the protagonist teaches Lillie to be courageous herself, and ultimately leads to Lillie bravely taking control of her own life and destiny.
